Are dough bowl candles safe?

Many people ask if dough bowl candles are safe, and rest assured, Stroud's Simply Southern dough bowl candles are safe! As long they are made correctly, all dough bowl candles are safe. I can only speak for my business, but the short answer is yes.

But just like with any candle, you must provide proper candle care. Here at Stroud's Simply Southern, each dough bowl candle is made in the safest and best way possible.

Each dough bowl is handmade specifically for candles. So these wooden dough bowls are crafted for the sole purpose of being used as a candle vessel. They are sealed on the inside to ensure there are no leaks, and sanded on the bottom for a flat surface.

Extra Steps We Take to Ensure Candle Safety during the Making Process

We also spray a non-toxic water based fire retardant on each dough bowl.

Each dough bowl candle is hand poured to order, which provides the highest quality candle and ensures safety.

The wick never comes in direct contact with the dough bowl, as long as you keep the wick trimmed.

Having the proper candle recipe is crucial in candlemaking. I tested multiple wicks in each type of candle for months to ensure I had the proper and best performing wicks for the bowls.

Using all natural soy wax also makes for a safer candle, because soy wax has a lower melting point. Only plant based oils are used and stirred into the wax the right amount of time to make sure the oils blend properly with the wax.

If the oils are not stirred properly and blended into the wax correctly, it causes pockets of oils to be grouped together, which is how candles get too hot, catch on fire, and break the jar.

So How do You Properly Care for your Dough Bowl Candles?

  • Keep your wick trimmed to 1/4 of an inch for EVERY burn.
  • On the first burn, let your candle burn until the top is liquid all the way to the edges of the candle, which is a full melt pool.
  • Burn for 3-4 hours at a time
  • Stop burning the candle when 1/4 of an inch of wax remains (do not burn if there is no wax left under the wicks)
  • Make sure the candle is on a flat surface, away from wind and drafts
  • Never leave a candle unattended, or near children or pets

Here at Stroud’s Simply Southern, I ensure every candle is safe and of the highest quality.  I follow the proper steps, and take extra precautions to make a safe and amazing candle for your home.

Note: I can only speak for my candles, and not all candles are made using proper precautions.  Dough bowl candles from other brands may not be as safe as mine.
